Picnic in the Garden

Today the EnviroHeroes had a celebration picnic in the Edible Garden. Thanks to Rachel for coming too. We reflected on our year and what we are proud of and we set a goal for 2016. It was great to hear of all the things that the children are proud of. We managed to polish off a lot of lovely kai including 2 chocolate cakes.

Spud in a Bucket

Today we judged the 'spud in a bucket' competition. Mason won the smallest, Thuy An the biggest and Maddi the no spud prize! Mason, his mum and I went down to Bunnings where he took out the weirdest spud for his spud that looked like an apple. Well done Mason. He's donated part of his prize 'more spuds' to our garden. Can't wait for a yummy potato slad once they've grown.

Thanks to Bunnings for all the buckets, spuds and for the amazing food and entertainment tonight.

EnviroHeroes showing the power of action

It was a lovely day in the garden today with a few hard working EnviroHeroes. While Maddi, Adwoa and I harvested some vegetables to sell after school, Mason, Gus and Ross worked on cleaning out the guttering that supplies our rain water tank. The children are loving making paper bricks too look out for them next winter they are fab to light your fire with. They all did an amazing job and really showed the what the power of action is all about.

Gideon's Writing

Gideon from Year 2 has done some amazing writing about our recent trip to Yarrs. I thought it would be nice to share it with you all. MY YARRS FLAT TRIP ON TUESDAY THE 20 OF OCTOBER 2015 I WENT TO YARRS FLAT ON A BIG COACH. IT WAS LOTS OF FUN!!! FOR WE HAD THE BUMPY GRAVEL FOR ABOUT 1 FIFTH OF THE WAY. ON THE BUMPY GRAVEL I PUT MY HEAD AGAINST THE WINDOW. WHEN WE GOT TO YARRS FLAT THERE WAS LOTS AND LOTS OF TALL GRASS AND DIPS THAT I COULD EASILY HIDE IN. I LIKED THE BUS THAT I WENT ON TO YARRS FLAT BECAUSE THE WINDOW WAS OPEN. THE WINDOW WAS OPEN FOR THE WHOLE TRIP AND I LIKED IT BECAUSE I COULD FEEL THE WIND ON MY FACE. I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO OPEN MY WINDOW. LUNCH TIME WAS THE ONLY TIME THAT I COULD PLAY IN THE TALL GRASS. I HAD A RED CAP ON SO I HAD TO TAKE IT OFF AND PUT IT UNDER MY PUKU. NO ONE CAN SEE IT IF IT IS UNDER MY PUKU! AFTER LUNCH AT YARRS FLAT I PLAYED A PREDATOR GAME. THE PREDATOR GAME WAS TAG BUT THERE WAS PEOPLE THAT GOT HANDED OUT A PREDATOR MASK. ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE WITHOUT A MASK WERE BIRDS. AFTER THAT I MADE A CHEW CARD. CHEW CARDS ARE HOLLOW PLASTIC CARDS WITH PEANUT BUTTER STUFFED IN EACH CORNER. IF YOU GO TO A CERTAIN WEBSITE YOU CAN FIND WHAT ANIMAL HAS CHEWED YOUR CARD. LASTLY WE WERE PLANTING ANOTHER FOREST. YARRS FLAT USED TO BE A FOREST. PEOPLE WERE CUTTING DOWN THE FOREST TO MAKE FARMLAND. WE WERE PLANTING ANOTHER FOREST AROUND YARRS FLAT BECAUSE WE WERE AND ARE MAKING NEW HABITATS FOR THE BIRDS THAT LIVE IN OR AROUND LAKE ELLESMERE AND YARRS FLAT. THESE BIRDS INCLUDE THE PUKEKO, PINE STILT AND BLACK GOOSE. THESE BIRDS ARE DYING BECAUSE WE HAVE BROUGHT PESTS TO NEW ZEALAND THAT LIKE TO EAT THESE BIRDS. SOMETIMES THE PESTS WERE BROUGHT BY ACCIDENT BUT NORMALLY THEY WERE BROUGHT ON PURPOSE. BY GIDEON (USA)

Planting

Over the last couple of weeks we have had some great lunchtimes in the Edible Garden. We have planted raspberries, blueberries, and lots of vegetables. We have also enjoyed our new shed. Here's some photos.

Wearable Arts 'Flash Trash' Celebration

Finally here are some photos from our amazing night. Thanks for all the hard work of the teachers, organising committee and children. We had a blast, learnt a lot and worked hard. But most of all thanks to our brilliant community for supporting us. We were all blown away by how many people turned out on the night. Enjoy!

Fruit Trees in Schools

Today our first 10 free fruit trees arrived. We have signed up for and are part of the Fruit Trees in Schools programme which means that for the next 5 years we receive 10 free fruit trees. This year we have gone for stone fruit and have planted them over by the portacom. Next year we have ordered citrus trees that we can use for cooking and making yummy puddings. We would like to thank Lincoln EnviroTown and Vicky and Aaron from Landscape Your Outdoor Space for sponsoring this initiative.

Friday Gardening with Room USC

It was such a lovely afternoon on Friday and I had enjoyed my lunchtime gardening so much that I decided to take some of my class (year 1's) out to finish off the planting. The EnviroHeroes had moved the bath and prepared it for planting at lunchtime so all we had to do was put the plants in the soil. The watering system is fully functioning now so we are good to get some good crops happening. Here's some photos of our planting and enjoying our time in the new shed!
